How to Play

If you’re new to flag football, you might be at a loss. What are the rules? How is it different from regular American football? Is this what I played in P.E. in middle school?

As of 2026, the rules for flag football can vary depending on the league.

For now, the best starting place is USA Football’s Flag Football 101 video above and NFL FLAG’s official rulebook.

  • 25 yards wide x 70 yards long in total with two 10- yard end zones

  • In NFL FLAG, teams have up to 10 players total and teams compete 5 v 5, though other leagues compete 6 v 6, 7 v 7, and 9 v 9.

    Under USA Flag Football rules, teams must consist of at least five players with a recommended maximum of 15 players.
