The Zambia flag dates back to 1964 when the country became an independent nation. The origins of the country and its flag date back to the colonial period when the country’s name was Rhodesia. The British South Africa Company commandeered the area of Southern Rhodesia first in 1899. They soon extended the boundaries of their administrative power across the Zambezi River into now Northern Rhodesia. The flag they flew represented their company not the country of Rhodesia.
In 1910, Northern Rhodesia separated from the rest of Rhodesia. It did not have its own unique flag. It was also not its own country. The British South Africa Company remained in control of Northern Rhodesia until 1923. The company then allowed Great Britain to buy them out, lock, stock and country.
The result was the creation of a new British Protectorate under the office of the Governor of Northern Rhodesia. The flag of this country simply reflected the British South Africa company’s influence with a Union Jack and arms. It was to be several years before the Zambia flag took on a national characteristic.
Between 1939 and 1963, Northern Rhodesia was a part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The flag featured a Union Jack in the left hoist. On the field to the right, in a blue triangle, the artist positioned a yellow fish eagle clasping a white fish in it claws. Beneath it ran six wavy lines, representative of the flowing waters of Victoria Falls.
After the Federation dissolved in 1963, Rhodesia went its own way. Effective in June, a year later, Northern Rhodesia abandoned its own name. On October 24, 1964, the country took the name of Zambia. It was now an independent state.
The flag of Zambia rose above the capital of Lusaka. The National Anthem “Lumbanyeni Zambia” or Stand and Sing of Zambia, Proud and Free plays while the proud Zambian flag waves. In fact, Zambian flags cannot be raised by anyone unless they receive permission from the Government. The exceptions include public holidays. Anyone and everyone fly a large or small Zambia flag on Africa Freedom Day. The Zambia flag also rises to the occasion on Heroes Day, Unity Day and Zambian Independence Day.
The Zambian flag colors are red, black, orange and green. The green field has the remaining tricolors positioned vertically in the bottom fly and over halfway up the field. The use of color in the flag of Zambia is symbolic. Red represents the struggle of people and the loss of their blood in the battle for freedom. Black represents the people of Zambia. The color orange means the country’s mineral wealth while green stands for the natural resources.
The eagle situated in the top fly, above the tri-colors, is different from the original bird. The eagle replaces the fish in earlier Zambia flags. The color green is also different from the shade used previously. In 1996, the clear or lighter green of Zambia’s flag became a darker green.
