UK Flag

The United Kingdom flag is called the "Union Jack" as it represents a group of countries-England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Others call it the "Union Flag" because it isn't flown on a jack staff, with is symbolic of a Union Jack flag. The United Kingdom flag has the cross of St. George (for England), cross of St. Andrew (for Scotland) and the cross of St. Patrick (for Ireland). The crosses of Wales are not on the British flags because Wales is ruled differently than the other three countries. Saint Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland. St. Patrick is thought to belong to the powerful Geraldine family of Ireland and Saint George is a martyred crusader who was a slayer of the dragons.

The history of British flags goes back to the 1600s when the first flag of Great Britain was first developed. The first Great Britain flag had only the crosses of England and Scotland as Ireland, at that point, had not yet been joined with England and Scotland. The red cross from England was put on the white on blue Scotland cross and then a white border was added. When Ireland became officially united with England, the Britain flag had to be changed yet again to add the Irish red diagonal cross on white.

The Union Jack is the UK Flag and is flown as a representative of the United Kingdom all over the world for the navy, royalty and military. The British are very proud of the flag of the United Kingdom and have been since the first flags of the UK were developed.
