Uganda has quite a long history going back to when the times before the birth of Christ. Back in the 1830s the Arab traders starting moving inland from the Indian Ocean to the coast of Africa and into the region of Uganda. Then in the 1860s the British moved into the area looking for the Nile. Religious missionaries moved into the area frequently in the 1870s, and by 1888 the area was under charter of the British East Africa Company which ruled it as a protectorate from 1894. It wasn't until 1962 that the Republic of Uganda was formed with its independence.
The Uganda flag was officially adopted when they gained their independence from the United Kingdom in the year of 1962. Many people have asked what is on the flag of Uganda. The answer is that it’s a Grey-crowned Crane. The flag of Uganda is made of six equal horizontal bands with black on the top, then yellow, red, black again, then yellow and then red on the bottom. There is a white disc in the center with the national symbol of a Grey-crowned Crane in the disc.
The colors on Uganda's flag have some symbolism for the people of Uganda. The black bands are meant to represent the African peoples, yellow stands for the sunshine in Africa, and the red is for African brotherhood since the color of blood is red, through which all Africans are connected. The Grey-crowned Crane on the flag of Uganda is said to stand for its gentle nature and was also the military badge of Ugandese soldiers during British rule.
