The flag of North Korea has a red background with a blue horizontal stripe at the top and bottom of the flag. Just above the bottom blue stripe, and just below the top blue stripe, are thin white horizontal stripes. Towards the left of the North Korean flag on the red background lies a white circle with a red, five-pointed star in the center of it.

The name Korea comes from the Koryo dynasty, which led the country from 918 to 1392. In 1910 Japan took over the country. After Japan was defeated in World War II, Korea was split into two zones of occupation. The Soviet Union occupied the north side of the thirty eighth parallel, and the United States occupied the south side of the thirty eight parallel. In 1948, North Korea created a communist government led by Kim Il Sung. In June 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea. This started the Korean war, which lasted from 1950 to 1953. Around four million lives were lost and the war ended in a stalemate. After the war, several million Koreans fled the dictatorship of Kim Il Sung, and North Korea became a secretive society. In the early 1990’s North Korea’s nuclear weapons program started to gain speed. In 1994 Kim II Sung died, and his son Kim Jong Il took over. Aid agencies estimate that up to two million individuals died of famine in North Korea during the 1990s. In 2000 Kim Jong Il, met South Korea’s leader Kim Dae Jong.
