Libya Flag

The flag of Libya has a solid green background. The Libyan flag is the only national flag in the world that is one color with nothing else on it.

Green is the national color of Libya as well as a representation of devotion to Islam. Green also symbolizes Libyan President Muammar al Qaddafi's 'Green Revolution', which was a desire to turn Libya into a wealthy agricultural nation. These are the colors of the Libya flag

Libya’s flag was enacted on November 19, 1977. Previously Libya had decided to leave the Federation of Arabs Republic, which consisted of Libya, Egypt and Syria. This flag of Libya had three equal sized horizontal stripes of red, white and black. Libya was granted independence from Italy on December 24, 1951. There were also other flags of Libya. The first Libya flag was a tri color flag of red, black and green. The red and green horizontal stripes were the same size. The larger center horizontal stripe of black contained a white star and crescent in the center. Another one of Libyan flags following the plain tri-color flag was the tri-color with a golden eagle holding a scroll with the Arabic name of the federation. These were the different Libya flags.

The first residents of Libya were the Berbers. In the seventh century BC, the Greeks took over Cyrenaica. In the sixth century, Carthage received Phoenician settlements in Tripolitania. Wondrous ruins are left from the Roman rule. The Arabs took over Libya in 643, and Islam became the mainstream religion. From 1551, Libya became a part of the Ottoman Empire. However, the power still remained with local rulers known as Janissaries. During the seventeenth century, Barbary pirates went after ships that were from bases along Libya’s Mediterranean coast. In 1914, Italy took over Libya. Libya was a battleground for several different North African movements during World War II. In 1951, Libya was listed as an independent monarchy led by King Idris. In 1969 Colonel Muammar Al Qaddafi created a socialist Islamic state. In 1986, the United States bombed Tripoli in response to information that Libya was involved in international terrorism. In 1999, two Libyans were sent to trial in response to evidence of the 1992 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
