The flag of Jordan has three equal sized horizontal stripes, the top layer is black, the middle layer is white, and the bottom layer is green. On the left hand side is a red triangle with a seven point white star in the middle. These are the colors for the flag of Jordan.
The Jordan flag has its own meaning. The black, white, and green layers symbolize the Arab dynasties of Abbasid from Baghdad, Umayyad from Damascus, and Fatmid from Morocco. The red triangle symbolizes the Hashemite dynasty, which are the leaders of Jordan. The seven point star has a few different meanings. One version states that the star represents the unity of all Arab peoples in Jordan. The other version states that the star represents the first seven verses of the Koran, which is the Islamic holy book. Some think of the star as representing both unity and the Koran.
The Jordanian flag was enacted on April 16, 1928. Britain granted Jordan its independence from mandate on May 25, 1946. The same Jordan flag as today was enacted from 1921 to 1928, only it did not have the star on it. A star was added in 1928. Before 1916, Jordan used the Turkish flag as Jordan was a part of the Ottoman Empire. 1946 was the last time the flag was updated. These are Jordan flags. This flag can be used both nationally and civilly by its citizens.
In 1916 Hussein ibn Ali brought the flag of the Great Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire with assistance from Lawrence of Arabia. The revolt was a great success. However, soon after it ended Arab unity began to fall apart. In 1923, Hussein’s son Abdullah became the Emir of Transjordan. In 1946, Abdullah was crowned king of the independent Hashemite kingdom of Jordan. In 1950, Jordan added the West Bank and East Jerusalem after the Arab Israeli Wars. In 1951 Abdullah was killed. In 1953, Abdullah’s son Hussein I was made king. The Six Day war brought the release of the West Bank and Easy Jerusalem. Jordan took on more than one million refugees. In 1970, Jordan fought its own civil war against the Palestine Liberation Organization. In 1994, King Hussein signed a peace treaty with Israel. In 1999, Hussein died, and his son Abdullah II became king.
