In 1923, an earthquake in Tokyo killed 123,000 people. In 1937, Japan chose to invade China starting the second Sino Japanese War. During World War II, Japan became allies with Italy and Germany. In 1941, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor’s United States base. In 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the attack, Emperor Hirohito surrendered to the United States. They occupied Japan from 1945 to 1952. Japan is the world’s second largest economic power.
