Italy Flag

Italy’s flag colors are based upon the French flag with its tri color theme. The flag has three equal sized vertical stripes of color. The left stripe is green, the middle stripe is white, and the right stripe is red. These are the Italian flag colors.

There are two different theories behind the meaning of the Italian flag. The first is that it came from military uniforms from Milan. The other theory is that Napoleon Bonaparte changed the blue of the French flag to green because he liked it better. This is the supposed meaning of Italy’s flag colors.

The flag of Italy was enacted on June 19, 1946. The Italia flag was first represented in the French controlled Lombardy region of northern Italy in 1796 and then represented again by Napoleon Bonaparte's Cisalpine Republic in 1797. In 1848, the King of Sardinia brought back the Italy flag using his coat of arms with it, for all the lands that he controlled. When the Italian Kingdom was created in 1861, it enacted the flag of Italy with the royal coat of arms as the Italian flags desire to bring together a united Italy. The arms were discarded from the Italy flags in 1946 when the monarchy was discarded for a new government. This is the history of the Italian flag. The fifteenth century Renaissance greatly changed the western cultures. Giuseppe Garibaldi assisted with creating the Kingdom of Italy under Victor Emmanuel II in 1861. The papacy chose not to give up Rome, so the Vatican City was granted independence in 1929. In 1922, Dictator Benito Mussolini came in to power. Italy fought on the Axis side of World War II until 1943 when Mussolini was fired and Italy surrendered. In 1948 Italy became a republic. Alcide de Gasperi was made Prime Minister from 1945 to 1953. In 2001 Silvio Berlusconi, a media owner, was made Prime Minister.
