Iran Flag

The flag of Iran design is of three equal sized horizontal stripes. The top layer is green, the middle layer is white, and the bottom layer is red. In the center white stripe, there is on the edges stylized writings, and in the center is Iran’s coat of arms which has four crescents and a sword.

The Iranian flag has its own meaning. The green stripe represents Islam, the white stripe symbolizes purity and peace, and the red stripe represents blood and valor. The writing around the center white stripe is stylized Kufi script, which says Allah-o Akbar this means God is great. It is written twenty two times around. This script symbolizes February 11, 1979 the day of independence for Iran. The coat of arms represents strength, fortitude, and growth of Muslim faith. The emblem as whole reads Allah or God. The current Iranian flag was adopted on July 29, 1980. Variations of these colors have been in use since the 18th century. Until 1905 a plain tri color flag of green, white, and pink and had been in use. The pink stripe was changed to red in 1933. The old flag of Iran consisted of those three colors, but instead of the current coat of arms in the center, there was a lion with a sword standing in front of a rising sun with a crown above it. However, these banners were all abolished when the shah was overthrown in 1979. The flag Iran is used both nationally and civilly for its citizens.

550 B.C. Cyrus the Great, took over the Median Empire, and founded the Achaemenid dynasty, rulers of Iran’s first empire. This dynasty lived past the Persian Wars against the different Greek city states, but lost to Alexander the Great in 331 B.C. In AD 224, the Sassanid took over Iranian rule. In 641 Arabs took over Iran and they brought in Islam. In the 1510’s Shah Ismail brought Iran back together and created a Shi’a theocracy. In 1921, Reza Pahlavi took power. In 1941, Britain and the Soviet Union lived in Iran, and Muhammad Pahlavi followed his father as Shah. In 1979, Pahlavi left, and Ayatollah Khomeini created an Islamic Republic. He created the current Iran flag. Muhammad Khatami became President in 1997.
