The Hungary flag has three equal sized horizontal stripes the top stripe is red, the middle stripe is white, and the bottom stripe is green. The red stripe represents strength, the white stripe symbolizes faithfulness and fidelity, and the green stripe represents hope. These are the reasons for the Hungarian flag colors.
The current Hungarian flag was enacted on October 1, 1957, but was first used in the 1848 to 1849 revolt. However, the revolution failed and it was not until after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, that the flag of Hungary again officially represented Hungary. The flag of Hungary was maintained until the occupation of Hungary by Germany in 1944. After the Second World War Hungary became a Soviet controlled nation in 1945 and adopted five different national flags over the next eleven years, all which were based on the red white green horizontal striped tri color. In 1956, Anti Soviet feelings led to the recurrence of the plain red white green horizontal striped Hungary flag.
There are a few different variations of the flag. The first is the flag with the coat of arms on it. This flag is legal whenever a person or institution is eligible to use the official coat of arms by law.
The second flag is the war flag. The third and final flag is the naval ensign flag. The national flag can be flown both nationally and civilly by its citizens.

However, Emperor Franz Joseph brought back his control in 1849. Austria’s loss in the Austro-Prussian war led to the creation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1918 Hungary again declared its independence. In 1941, Hungary aligned itself with Nazi Germany and violent anti Semitism saw the murder of many Jews. In 1948 communists overthrew the government of Imre Nagy. In 1956 a revolt led to the return of Nagy. The Soviets stopped the revolt and Janos Kadar came to rule the country. In 1989 Kadar resigned from power and multi party elections were held. In 1999 Hungary joined NATO.
