Guinea Flag

Guinea’s Flag has three equal vertical stripes of color, which was based on France’s tri color flag. The left stripe is red, the middle stripe is green, and the right stripe is red. The flag is based upon the French flag design only the colors represent the Pan-African colors. This is the description of guinea's flag. The red stripe represents the blood of the anti-colonist martyrs, the sweat of factory workers farmers and other workers, and it is the wish for progress. The red stripe represents the first part of their motto travail or work. The yellow stripe represents gold and the African sun. It is the sum of energy, generosity, and equality for all men to whom the sun was given equally. The yellow stripe represents the second part of their motto justice. The green stripe represents vegetation. A majority of the population live in the countryside, therefore green means prosperity that will come from the soil and subsoil, and the difficult life of the people living in the countryside. The Mali Empire conquered West Africa in the twelfth century. The Songhai Empire replaced the Mali Empire in the fifteenth century. Portuguese travelers landed in the mid fifteenth century. They began the slave trade. In the eighteenth century, the Fulani started a holy war. In 1849, France became involved and gave protection to the Atlantic coast. It was then named French Guinea. In 1895, it became part of French West Africa. In 1958, Guinea declared independence. Sekou Toure became the first president from 1958 to 1984. He instituted the flag of guinea. The flag has not been modified since it was instituted. In 1970 Portuguese Guinea, now known as Guinea Bissau, tried to usurp Guinea by invading. In 1984 Colonel Lansana Conte became president. By 2000, Guinea has become home to several hundreds of thousands of refugees from neighboring warring countries like Sierra Leone and Liberia.
