France Flag

The French Republic is located in Western Europe and borders the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay between Spain and Belgium. The capital of France is Paris, which is also the largest city. The official language spoken in France is French.

The France flag is a vertical, tricolor flag with three stripes of equal size. For anyone that wonders how many colors are on the flag of France, there are three colors, which are blue, white, and red. On the flag of France, the blue vertical stripe is closest to the hoist or left hand side of the flag of France, the white strip is in the center, and the red stripe is on the right or fly side of French flags.

The French national flag length is fifty percent longer than it is wide. The French flag colors are all equal width stripes except on the Navy flags of France. Originally, the navy flag stripes were not the same width and proportioned as blue thirty percent, white thirty-three percent and red thirty-seven percent. The meaning behind the France flag stripes being different widths was so they appeared the same to the human eye. Because the white is brighter, they believed it looked wider than the red and blue stripes. The proportions on the navy flag changed to equal width under Napoleon 1. On May 17, 1853, they changed the navy flag back to using the previous color proportions, which they still use today.

According to French flag history, they first used the vertical tricolor stripes on naval flags as a canton in 1790. By the year 1794, this had extended to the entire field. On February 15, 1794 at the French National Convention, they adopted the tricolor France flag as the national France flags. To avoid mix-up in naval warfare, they flew the French flag on May 1794, when they officially adopted the flag France. The big French flag is one of the oldest flags in the world.

When you see a picture of France flag, the colors represent different things. The blue color on the flag of France represents care and signifies the duty of people that well off to help those less fortunate. The white color on the flag of France symbolizes royalty. When the king’s vessels were at sea, they carried plain white flags. Red symbolizes the blood shed in battles.
