England Flag

England is located in Western Europe between the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. The capital of England is London and is its largest city. The official language spoken is English.

The history of England national flag is unclear and there are many theories but one known fact is that the England flag did appear during the middle ages. In the Welsh war of 1275, they are records of the St. George’s cross emblem in a roll of account but they refer only to the emblem and not to the English flag. A story about the flag of England, which most historians do not accept, is that in 1190 the City of London and England adopted the flag of England design for protection of the Genoese navy. In the middle ages, a red cross placed on a white background represented St. George as patron saint.

When the Crusades started, the St. George’s Red Cross placed on a background of white was long associated with England. The pope decided that French crusaders would wear a red cross with a white background. England crusaders would wear the white cross with a red background but the English knights claimed back the English flag with their cross with the white background and a cross of red. Many people are unaware of the England flags having a white background with the red cross of St. George and are surprised when they see a picture of England flag. They believe that the large England flag is the Union Jack, which the English flags are not. The Union Jack is the United Kingdoms flag, which includes Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. When you look closely at the Union Jack, the cross of St. George is incorporated into it.
