Although often confused with the Dominican Republic, which is a separate Caribbean nation, the Commonwealth of Dominica, usually referred to as Dominica, is an island located in the Caribbean Sea. Dominica got its name from the day that Columbus discovered the island, which was a Sunday. Dominica means Sunday in Latin. The capital and largest city in Dominica is Roseau and the official language is English.
On November 3, 1978, the Commonwealth of Dominica adopted the Dominican flag. Over the next twelve years there were some minor changes made to the Dominica flag. In 1988, they added the yellow outlines to the green stars and the black and white lines on the Dominica flag switched positions. They switched the parrot so it faced left instead of right. The Dominican flag has a background of forest green with three vertical, equal sized stripes going from the top of the Dominican flags to the bottom. The Dominica flag also has three horizontal, equal sized stripes going from the hoist side to the fly side of the flag. Both sets of stripes cross through the Dominica flags centre. These cool Dominican flags horizontal strips are yellow on top, black in the middle and white on the bottom while the Dominica + flag vertical strips are yellow, black in the middle, and white. In the very centre of the flag of Dominica is a red circle. Inside this red circle is a mostly green and purple Sisserou parrot or Imperial Amazon parrot, which faces the hoist or left side of the flag. Circling the Sisserou are ten stars, which are green in color and each have five points with yellow outlines.
The meaning of the ten green stars on the animated Dominica flags represent hope and symbolize the Dominica’s ten parishes. The Dominica national bird is the Sisserou parrot, which represents fulfillment of people’s aspirations and flight towards achieving their greatest goals. The green stars on the Dominican flag symbolize equality, hope, and the island’s parishes. The combined stripes on the Dominica flag form a cross, symbolizing their Christian faith, while individually the three lines represent the Trinity of God. The green on Dominican flags represent the island’s abundant landscape, the yellow symbolizes sunshine, the red stands for social justice, white symbolizes purity and clean waters, and the black represents their African ancestry and earth.
There are cartoon with the Dominican flags, a Dominica stick flag, shirts with the Dominican flag, Dominican flag wallpaper, and even tattoos of the Dominican flag for Dominica flag collectors.
