Cuba Flag

The Republic of Cuba is in the Caribbean and is an island between North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Havana is the capital of Cuba and is the largest city. Their official language is Spanish and their currency the Peso.

The Cuban flags beginning dates back to 1849 when there were many crusades to free Cuba from the Spanish rule, especially among United States Cuban exiles. In 1848, Venezuelan general Narciso seriously tried to free Cuba from the Spanish. Poet Miguel Teurbe Tolón designed ‘The Lone Star’ banner or ‘La Estrella Solitaria’, which, under Narciso López leadership became the Cuban flag. The national flag of Cuba was officially adopted in 1902 when Cuba became independent, and is still the flag of Cuba today.

The flag of Cuba consists of five equal width horizontal stripes. On the Cuban national flag the blue stripes are across the top, in the middle, and at the bottom of the Cuban flag. On a 4 x 6 Cuban flag there are two white stripes with one between the top and middle blue stripe and one between the middle and bottom blue stripe on flags of Cuba. Along the left side of the Cuba flag is a horizontal red triangle which points towards the center of the Cuba national flag. Centered in the middle of the red horizontal triangle is a five-pointed white star.

Cuban flag history states that the official meaning of the three horizontal blue stripes symbolize Cuba’s three old divisions, while the two horizontal white stripes represent the strength of Cuba’s independent ideal. Cuba flag facts state that the red triangle on Cuba flags stand for freedom, fraternity, equality, and the blood shed during Cuba’s fight for independence. According to Cuba flag history, the white five-pointed star represents the Cuban peoples absolute freedom.

During the Spanish-American war, when Cuba was seized by the United States from Spain, the Cuban flags were removed and it was the American stars and stripes that flew from January 1, 1899 until Cuban was granted independence from the United States. As a symbol of sovereighnty and independence, Cuba again hoisted the Cuban national flag on May 20, 1902. The national flag of Cuba has flown and remained unchanged ever since. Even in 1959, after the Cuban revolution, the Cuban flag remained the same.
