In central Africa, two neighboring countries share the name ‘Congo’ and their full official names distinguish them. Either the Congo’s or Congolese refer to both or either countries. They usually refer to the Peoples Republic of Congo or Congo-Brazzaville as the Republic of the Congo. It officially became the People’s Republic of Congo on January 3, 1970 and known as the Republic of the Congo since March 15, 1992. Their capital is Brazzaville, which is also their largest city and their official languages are French, Kituba, Lingala, Kongo, and Swahili.
To the east lies the larger of the two Congo’s, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, often referred to as Congo-Kinshasa or DR Congo. King Leopold II of Belgium once claimed this as his personal property, called it the Congo Free State, and later renamed the Belgian Congo. From 1971 until 1997, they called it Zaire. The capital and largest city is Kinshasa and their official language is French.
According to the history of the Congo flag, on August 18, 1958, the Congo originally adopted the flag of republic of Congo flag. In 1970 they abandoned this Congo flag but then on June 10, 1991 flag Congo was readopted. The Congo flag color of green, yellow, and red are traditional Pan-African colors originating from Ethiopian flag colors. There are two three-color sets named Pan-African colors, which are green, gold or yellow, and red and red, black, and green. The Congo flag color is a diagonally divided flag with a green stripe on the left, a yellow stripe on the flag of Congo in the middle, and a red stripe on the right side. On February 20, 2006, the Democratic Republic of the Congo officially adopted the Democratic Republic of Congo flag. A new Constitution was formally approved in December 2005 and effective starting in February 2006 announcing the return of the flag of democratic republic of Congo flown from 1963 until 1971 with one minor change.
