Artist and economist Zeng Liansong designed the People’s Republic of China flag. In July 1949, shortly after the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference came into power, they distributed circulars for a design competition for the China national flag. The China flag design competition received over three thousand entries and they nominated Zeng’s flag of China as one out of the thirty-eight finalists. Out of these thirty-eight finalists, they finally chose Zeng Liansong’s China – flag design as the winner. On the day of the national flag China unveiling, Mao Zedong lifted flag China, overlooking Tiananmen Square.

To the right of this large five-pointed yellow star are four smaller five-pointed yellow stars which angle on a curve. There are several different opinions as to what the colors and stars represent on the China flag. Some believe that the red color on the flag of China represents the bloodshed of martyrs that fought for the revolution, so China could achieve political power. They believe the big yellow five-pointed star represents China’s communist party and the four five-pointed yellow stars symbolize China’s ethnic groups.
