Chad Flag

The republic of Chad is a central African landlocked country with a largely desert climate. Chad borders Libya, Sudan, Central African Republic, Cameroon and Nigeria, and Niger. Its capital and largest city is N’Djamena and the official languages spoken are French and Arabic.

On November 6, 1959, the Republic of Chad originally adopted the Chad flag, inspired by pan-African colors that used blue instead of the green color and by the tricolor flag of the French. They used blue instead of green in the flag of Chad in order to avert confusion between Chad’s neighboring countries flags. It was not until August 11, 1960 that Chad became independent from France.

The national Chad flag symbol or color on the Republic of Chad flag is a tricolor vertical flag consisting of a blue stripe, a yellow stripe, and a red stripe. Chad flags colors combine traditional Pan-African colors with the flag of France colors. The blue color on the Chad flag symbolizes agriculture, hope, sky, and the waters south of Chad. The yellow stripe on the Chad flag represents the desert north of Chad and the sun. The red color on the flag of Chad stands for sacrifice, unity, and progress. Both Romania and Chad share the same country flag, which has certainly caused some complications. Although most observers believe that the Romania and Chad flags are identical, the president of Romania, Ion Lliescu, refuses to give up their Romanian flag. There are unconfirmed reports from the media in Romania stating that the Republic of Chat wants the United Nations to look into this issue between the Romania flag and the Chad flag.

On August 11, 1970, Chad adopted their official coat of arms, which two Frenchmen designed in European style. The Chad coat of arms has the same blue, yellow, and red colors found on the Chad flag. The wavy blue color bars on the coat of arms yellow shield represent Lake Chad. The two supports on the Chad coat of arms are a mountain goat and a lion. The lion stands for Chad’s south country while the mountain goat signifies the north part of the country. On the supporter’s ribbon and fur are red arrows representing salt. The National order of Chad is represented on the Chad coat of arms by a medal, directly below the shield. Although Chad seldom uses its coat of arms, they often use it on postage stamps and medals, which they sell to foreign collectors.
