Bosnia and Herzegovina is in southeastern Europe and borders Croatia and the Adriatic Sea. Its capital is Sarajevo, which is also the largest city. Their official languages are Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian. Throughout history there has been constant changes made to the Bosnia Herzegovina flag with one change dating back to the Tvrtko reign in the 1300s.
The current national Bosnia and Herzegovina flag has a vertical band of medium blue on the left side with an isosceles triangle of yellow bordering the band and across the flags top. The rest of the Bosnia & Herzegovgina flag is a medium blue color. There are seven white five-pointed stars and two white half stars on the side of the right triangle opposite the right angle. On the new flag of Bosnia, the triangles three points represent Bosnia’s three nations, which are the Serbs, Croats, and Bosnians. Some people refer to Bosnia as the heat-shaped nation so believe the triangles three points represent the Bosnia map, which looks similar to a heart or triangle. The white stars on the flag of Bosnia are supposed to represent Europe and an unending number of stars. The yellow, blue, and white colors on the Bosnian flag are associated with peace and neutrality while the blue and yellow colors also signify the gratitude of Bosnia to the European Union in helping end the conflict.
The Bosnia flag changed many times throughout history. Bosnia and Herzegovina gained independence in 1991 from Yugoslavia. There was a new independent flag Bosnia from 1991 to 1998 to represent this important time. The new Bosnia flag had the Bosnian fleur-de-lis centered on the flags white background. After they signed the Dayton Agreement in Bosnia and Herzegovina, both the Croats and Serbs viewed this Bosnian flag as representing only the Bosnian Muslims or Bosniaks. They eventually changed their flag to the new flag of Bosnia seen today. A high representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina introduced the new Bosnia and Herzegovina flag, which containing no historical or Bosnian state references because parliament could not find a solution that suited everyone.
The People’s Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina flag flew from 1945 until 1991. The flags background was red, symbolizing communism and socialism, with the flag of Yugoslavia in the left upper corner. During the Yugoslav period, there was also a new coat of arms for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which symbolized Bosnia’s industrialism during this period.
