Barbados is an independent island nation situated near the Caribbean Sea in the western Atlantic Ocean. Its largest city is Bridgetown, which is also Barbados capital.
On November 20, 1966, Barbados officially adopted the national flag of Barbados. The Barbados flag is a triband flag, which is among the most common of all flag designs and makes up thirty percent of the worldwide current national flags. Although some people call them tricolor, triband flags feature three parallel bands of color either vertically or horizontally. Some triband flag designs have three separate colors, like the flag of France, while others have a different color in the middle separating two bands of the same color, such as the flag of Austria. Vertical triband are the most common and are usually of equal widths, whereas many diagonal triband do not have equal width stripes.
The Barbados national flag is a triband flag and has a golden middle band, which separates two ultramarine bands vertically. In the center of the golden band is a black trident head, which is a three pronged spear or staff. They also call the trident head on Barbados flags ‘the broken trident’. According to the Barbados flag origin, the broken trident represents the countries independence and separation from the United Kingdom. Each point on the trident head represents a form of government called democracy. As seen on a picture of Barbados flag, the two ultramarine bands represent the sky and the ocean. The golden band on a picture of Barbados flags symbolizes Barbados sand.
The Royal flags and vice regal flags of Barbados include the personal flag of Queen Elizabeth the Second in Barbados and depicts a centered blue leafed bearded fig tree. Each corner, on a yellow field, is a pride of Barbados flower, which is a thorny bush. There is also the letter ‘E’, which has a gold rose garland surrounding it. The flag of the Governor-General of Barbados has the word ‘Barbados’ and a blue field with a crown, which has a lion standing on it. The Naval ensign of Barbados is the military flag, which has a white background. In the top left canton, it has the flag of Barbados. A historical flag, the flag of the colony of Barbados flew from 1885 until 1958 and has the British blue background with a Barbados emblem.
